(Kind of spoilers ahead, tried to vague it up a bit) I can see that the ending can be a bit unfulfilling and manipulative, and how some people can have some gripes with the movie as a whole. I thought the movie was a masterpiece, and I'll explain why. Right after I watched it, I was almost in tears like Oh god, please don't make it end like this. dammit. It made me angry, too, but after thinking about it for a few hours, going back and watching it again, I understood what Takahata meant. The song the kids and Lil Bamboo (and again later as Kaguya) sing made it clear. Life is unfair and unforgiving and laden with good intentions with poor outcomes, and all things must end. Flower, bear fruit, and die. Be born, grow up, and die. Still the wind blows, the rain falls, the waterwheel goes round, lifetimes come and go in turn. When Kaguya calls out to end it all (Emperor scene) she sees her end coming (something none of us can see, but if we did, we'd react the same way) she remembers what really matters to her, and her parents regret all they've forced her to do. Instead of succumbing to the inevitable, she spends her remaining time attempting to catch up on everything she's missed out on, regardless of what others may think of her. Even up to the end, she's begging and pleading and crying for more time, because she's finally righted herself, and learned what it means to live, after she had just cried to end it all a few days previous. Birds, bugs, beasts, grass, trees, flowers, teach me how to feel, if I hear that you pine for me, I will return to you, helps close it out. People/customs can sometimes inhibit feelings in general ( noble women do not laugh or cry' father not knowing what makes his daughter happy. Nature has a different connection with us in a way humans cannot possibly fulfill. Nature doesn't teach how to be happy, but how to feel. Combined with all the themes of the film, and the climax, it expresses that feelings are life. To feel is to laugh, to cry, to feel pain, to love, to live. Then the ending made me sad again, and angry, and it was great. It was overly emotional on purpose. To get these feelings from this film is exactly what Takahata wanted. To watch this film is to laugh, cry, feel pain, and love. To watch this film is to live. And finally, I also realized that Kaguya isn't gone for good, just for now. She is like the mountain, who appears to be dead and broken, but will return to life in time, as will all people (not like zombies, but metaphorically. It is revealed who she truly is about 15 minutes before the ending (while not directly saying it. She has returned once before. If I hear that you pine for me, I will return to you. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is a 2013 Japanese anime fantasy/drama film directed by Isao Takahata and part of the infamous collection of Studio Ghibli films, other known ones being Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro. To my delight, Studio Ghibli has done it once again and produced another fantastic movie. One that delivers a beautiful, emotional narrative about a bamboo cutter who discovers a tiny princess growing from one of the shoots, who then grows up to become royalty only to feel misplaced, without an sense of identity and at times feels isolated. One that delivers blissful, traditional sounding Japanese folk scores and a very unique, water-coloured based animation style, hand crafted to perfection. The film focuses primarily on the princess and her short but memorable life on Earth. The tale features many different themes that keep the story diverse and engaging, and the ending provides a prefect sense of closure while being hugely powerful and heart- wrenching. The film is also very mature and provides all round entertainment for people of all ages-not just young children. The film does have a few flaws however that just slightly hold it back from being a 'perfect 10' the first being its length at 2hrs 17mins certain parts certainly felt dragged out, especially when arriving in the capital during the second act and some extremely slow paced scenes that aren't hugely interesting or gripping. These however barely take from the experience of this beautiful film and proving once again Studio Ghibli are the masters of anime and a huge influence on animation films in general. 8/10.
